MWS6103 Music Composition III

Course Overview

Educational Level: Graduate, Master
Credit Hours: 3 Credits
Instructor: Dr. Travis Doucette

Course Description:

Capping off content taught in the first two music composition courses, this course teaches the final phase of songwriting; song promotion and marketing. This course equips students with knowledge needed to establish a social media presence for their works on wide platform or social media outlets including Linked In, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others. Students learn how to register and establish their works with a PRO, radio promotion, basic copyright law, and how to submit their songs to CCLI, the leading song licensing organization for Christian music sung in churches.

How This Course Benefits Students:

Songwriters in general often find themselves confused, and amiss in an overwhelming sea of administration-related tasks when it comes to song copyright, publishing and marketing. Although songwriters do not need to be experts in these areas, a basic knowledge is required in order for their songs to have the most opportune experiences and exposure. God wants us to be good stewards of our gifts and part of that for a songwriter is understanding the landscape of song promotion.

Why This Course Is Important:

Becoming a Worship Writer doesn’t stop when your song is finished. Now that you have your perfectly crafted composition completed, you want others to hear it and see them experience the same truths that prompted you to compose it. Although songwriters often shy away from the administrative aspects of copyright, publishing and marketing, a basic knowledge is needed for any successful songwriter. Gain the skills needed to navigate through copyright, marketing and song promotion so your hard work can be accessed and enjoyed by others. This course will give you a clear roadmap to song administration so your music can receive the most opportunities to be heard and enjoyed by others.
